Different Lock Types and Their Purposes

Virginia Beach LocksmithThere are a bunch of different lock types available on the market that homeowners and businesses can choose from in order to secure their properties. Below you will find descriptions of the most popular lock types used today. You will learn more about their benefits, as well as their downsides and whether or not a given lock type if the right choice for your security needs.

Knob Locks

Knob locks are the most popular type of low-security lock. They are primarily used on interior doors in residential spaces. They look identical to a standard doorknob, expect the interior side of the doorknob has a small latch in the center. When you turn the latch, the doorknob locks in place, making it so that no one can enter into the room. The reason knob locks are considered low-security locks is because they are not considered good stand-alone locks entrances or exits. If one were to use a knob lock on an exterior door, it would need to be paired with a deadbolt lock in order to provide any amount of security. For rooms like bathrooms and bedrooms, however, knob locks are a great choice.

Deadbolts

The most popular exterior door locks are deadbolt locks. Deadbolts provide the right amount of security for any home or residential space. Single-cylinder deadbolt locks are the most common type of deadbolt lock you will see. These locks have a turn latch on the interior side of the lock and a key slot on the exterior side. When one leaves their home, they can use the key to lock the door and once one arrives home and is inside, they can lock the door using the turn latch on the interior side. Deadbolt locks make securing your home easy and effective.

The other type of deadbolt lock you may not be familiar with is known as a double-cylinder deadbolt. These locks are similar to a standard deadbolt lock, except they have a key slot on both sides. This means that a key is required if one wants to unlock or unlock the door, regardless of which side of the door they are on. Single-cylinder deadbolts are preferred to double-cylinder because they are much more convenient. However, know that double-cylinder deadbolt locks are more secure and provide increased protection.

Jimmy Proof Deadbolt

If you want a deadbolt lock that works similarly to a single-cylinder model, but is more secure, you can always choose a jimmy proof deadbolt. These locks are shaped differently compared to a standard deadbolt lock. They sit flat on the door and have two interlocking bolts that connect vertically to a strike plate placed on the door frame. Due to the way these locks are designing, breaking into one is nearly impossible. The double, interlocking bolts make these locks highly secure and tamper-proof against break-ins.

Handle Sets

Some homeowners want to upgrade or get away from traditional deadbolt styles, especially when it comes to their front doors. Since presentation is important, you may want to trade in your deadbolt locks for a handle set. A handle set works similarly to how a knob lock and a deadbolt lock might work in conjunction with one another. The exception is that handle sets are much more decorative looking and come in different styles that you cannot find with traditional deadbolts. Handle sets can help you add a unique look to your home’s exterior appearance without sacrificing any sort of security or personal safety. These locks are just as secure as traditional deadbolts, but give homeowners the chance to change up their home’s current style and presentation.

Smart or Electronic Locks

If the highest level of security possible is what you are most interested in, then you will want to install smart or electronic locks. There are many electronic lock models that are available today, but for the most part, you can count on any type of smart lock model being more secure than any traditional type of lock. Since electronic locks require program and usually have specialized mechanisms that are required for entry, tampering with them is nearly impossible. When it comes to electronic locks, most criminals will not even bother trying to tamper with them. Some models even come with doorbell cameras so you can capture video of anyone who approaches your front door or tries to tamper with the lock.

If you are serious about upgrading to smart or electronic locks of any kind, be sure to work with a specialist. Ask a local locksmith in your area if they have experience with programming and installing smart locks. You will want a trained professional who has worked with electronic locks in the past to oversee and perform your installations no matter what.
